Imagine packing your lunch box for work at the same employer for more than 40 years.
A local couple—Brenda Hickey and her common-law partner Kevin Masters—are marking a pretty extraordinary milestone when they head to their first shift of the season at Icewater Seafoods in Arnold’s Cove.
The plant resumes cod processing today, processing fish from 3PS and the sentinel fishery before the official re-opening of the cod fishery in 2J3KL this summer.
President Alberto Wareham says Hickey and Masters have worked at the plant for a combined 94 years.
He says Hickey is marking 44 years of service this year, while Masters marked his 50th anniversary of work at the plant earlier this year. “I think that’s something in any industry, in any part of the world, but for the fishing industry in Newfoundland, that’s pretty unique I think.”
Wareham says they’re looking forward to the resumption of the commercial cod fishery after a moratorium that lasted more than 30 years.
