A mother in North West River is hoping that whoever took her son’s ashes will bring them back to her, no questions asked.
Sheila Cooper lost her son Jonathan to fentanyl poisoning in May of 2022.
He was a successful tattoo artist in Calgary who took drugs recreationally. Cooper says she warned her son about fentanyl but he assured her that he trusted his source. He was found dead at home after collapsing on his bathroom floor following a music concert.
Cooper carries his ashes with her in a glass skull that was chosen by his sister. She brought the skull with her while visiting her camper last month, but when she was called away, someone got inside.
She believes they grabbed the urn thinking it was a candle.
Cooper says it’s not uncommon for people hitchhiking the road between Goose Bay, North West River and Sheshatshiu to seek shelter in cabins and campers if they don’t have luck getting a ride, so she holds no animosity toward the person who took it.
“I get it,” says Cooper, who says the person also took a blanket, some food and water.
Cooper just wants the person to bring the skull back and drop it off at a local store or post office, no questions asked.
