This Saturday marks the 100th anniversary of Newfoundland’s oldest radio station still in operation.
VOWR, or the Voice of Wesleyan Radio, was founded in July of 1924 by Reverend Joseph Joyce who was the minister at Wesley United at the time.
Joyce founded the station to reach people in their homes.
VOWR is still broadcasting to this day, completely staffed by volunteers.
Station Manager Ron LeDrew says in a fast-paced world, people still need a “soft place to land” and listeners find that at VOWR.
A historic church service will take place on Sunday, July 21, with Carleton Joyce, the grandson of the station founder, in attendance.
