Primer Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce a cabinet shuffle today to fill the gap left by the resignation of Labour Minister, Seamus O’Regan.
The MP for St. John’s South-Mount Pearl announced yesterday that he’s leaving cabinet as of today, and while he will stay on to represent the district, he won’t be running in the next general election.
O’Regan says his reasons for leaving is simple, he wants to spend more time with his family.
“It’s been ten years” says O’Regan “my husband more or less said ‘okay, you know.’ We spend an awful lot of time apart, and we’d like to be together a lot more than we are, that’s really it.”
He admits, that’s a reason he often viewed with skepticism, but told Tim Powers on VOCM, it’s true.
“I used to be a reporter…and you’d hear a politician say they’re leaving for family reasons, and you’d cock an eyebrow and say ‘oh God, give me a break, what’s the real reason?’ I’ve since discovered that 99 per cent of the time that is the reason.”
O’Regan, who is friends with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the PM took the news well, despite the difficult nature of the conversation.
