Premier Andrew Furey says Newfoundland and Labrador is “more than happy” to do its share to take some of the asylum-seekers showing up in Ontario and Quebec “within our limits.”
This issue is a serious one for Ontario and Quebec which is struggling to deal with the disproportionate cost of people who arrive, usually on a tourist visa, and then declare asylum in Canada.
Ottawa does not provide much in the way of financial assistance to deal with asylum-seekers who are distinctly different from immigrants and refugees.
Premier Furey says Newfoundland and Labrador can do more to help, but in a measured way that makes sense for this province.
