Premier Andrew Furey condemns what he calls the “American style attack ads and memes” being used to spread disinformation on the PC Party’s social media accounts.
Furey was responding to questions surrounding a recent post on the PC Party of Newfoundland and Labrador’s X account, which appeared to quote the Premier as saying something he never said.
Leader Tony Wakeham when questioned on VOCM indicated that the post should never have gone out using quotations, which are used to denote a direct quote.
Premier Furey says it’s an approach he won’t be taking.
“Unfortunately, you’re seeing the spread of disinformation in an American-style, a Trump-style, attack ads and memes. I don’t endorse that approach,” Furey told VOCM News.
“I encourage anyone who gets in…public life to present a vision, present strategies, present policies, and there should be a robust debate on the content of that. But, to misquote people and spread misinformation is certainly something that I’m not going to do. And, frankly, I really think that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians don’t want it.”
