You’re almost guaranteed to see boats and other watercraft out on the water during the summer months, but Transport Canada is urging safety to ensure a leisurely trip doesn’t turn tragic.
There are nearly 100 boating deaths in Canada each year, with 80 per cent of those killed not wearing a life jacket.
Sharon Sellars, a boating safety officer with Transport Canada, says putting on a proper personal floatation device is the most important thing to do before heading out.
She says there is a wide selection of PFDs on the market that suit different types of boating. She recommends picking one that fits well and feels comfortable to wear at all times.
