It’s a common predicament many parents find themselves in—finding a spot at a daycare for their child.
Both regulated and non-regulated childcare spaces, such as those provided in one’s home, operate in this province. Only those regulated by the government are eligible for the $ 10-a-day subsidy.
While parents would prefer to send their child to a regulated spot, lack of availability often means beggars can’t be choosers.
Childcare activist Gillian Pearson says the at-home daycares are still subject to inspections and have rules they must abide by.
She says parents should ask a few key questions before reserving a space with a non-regulated operator.
If the children are all under the age of two, they are only allowed to take a maximum of three kids into their care. If only two children are under the age of two, the capacity is increased to four. Pearson says it’s very important to ensure the daycare is abiding by the capacity rules in place.
