The national unemployment rate did not change last month but the rate in Newfoundland and Labrador went up by almost half a percentage point.
Unemployment in NL in June was 9.2 per cent but that rose to 9.6 in July. The rate dipped in the St. John’s to 7.4 per cent in July, down from 7.7 in June.
Statistics Canada says students are facing a particularly challenging summer job market, while recent immigrants are disproportionately affected by the weakening labour conditions.
