A man arrested following a fatal hit-and-run in St. John’s on Regatta Day has been released on bail.
Thirty-seven-year-old Mark Duke of Fox Harbour had been in custody since he was tracked down in the aftermath of the tragedy.
He’s accused of hitting a pedestrian at the intersection of Hamel Street and Freshwater Road at around 10 a.m. last Wednesday.
The victim, a 61-year-old man, was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but was pronounced dead a short time later.
It’s alleged Duke’s Dodge Ram pickup also took out a light pole before racing from the scene.
However, a description of the truck from witnesses led police to it in a parking lot on George Street West.
Duke was charged with impaired driving causing death and failure to stop at the scene of a collision.
He was released from custody late this morning on numerous conditions, and is due back in court on Sept. 24.
Police are still appealing to the public for any video they might have of the incident.
