Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says federal rules need to be changed in order to address the financial crunch many people are feeling.
Singh has been making his rounds in the province over the last few days, and says the main concern he’s been hearing is around the cost of living.
He argues that the “the deck has been stacked against [people]” and policies need to be altered.
One such example is around what he calls “bread price fixing.” Singh says corporate grocery chains and bread producers “colluded” to jack up the price of bread to the tune of $5 billion. He says the maximum fine handed out under federal rules for that was $50 million, which Singh says was “barely a slap on the wrist.”
Another thing Singh says the NDP would do, is impose a cap on the price of food essentials, such as bread and baby formula.
On housing, he says they would ban big corporations from buying up affordable homes, and ban companies from jacking up rent on homes that take any form of federal support.
