Wildlife officials are advising residents to be mindful of the potential for run-ins with black bears in the province.
There has been an increase in sightings of the animals in recent weeks as they fatten up for winter hibernation.
Officials say it’s important to take precautions to prevent attracting bears to residential areas and campsites. That includes making sure that garbage is properly disposed of and secured indoors until garbage day.
People should also keep pets indoors, or under close supervision outside where bears have been seen.
You should never feed wildlife, and if you do see a bear, and it sees or smells you, never run, remain calm, back away, avoid eye contact, and give the animal plenty of space to escape.
If the bear does not see you:
- Quietly back away and leave the area;
- Try to stay downwind from the animal to avoid it picking up your scent;
- Keep an eye on the bear;
- Never get between a bear and her cubs.
