The Canadian Tax Payers Federation is calling on the provincial government to make its cut to the gas tax permanent.
The cut, which amounts to about eight cents per litre, was first introduced in spring 2022 to combat the rising cost of living.
The cut was extended in 2023 and again earlier this year. If the cut is not extended, it will expire on March 31st, 2025.
Devin Drover, Atlantic Director of the Federation, says people in the province are already paying 35 per cent of their gas bill in taxes, and the expiration of the cut will only make the situation worse.
The CTF recently released a Gas Tax Honesty Report, which indicates people are paying 66 cents per litre in combined federal and provincial taxes at the pumps.
Drover says with so much money going into taxes, “the last thing families need is for one of those taxes to go back up.”
He is urging Furey to make the cut permanent, and for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to follow Furey’s lead and cut the carbon tax.
