The Minister of Foreign Affairs says Ottawa is committed to the future of 5 Wing Goose Bay and new funding is coming for the facility conjunction with Ottawa’s new Arctic Foreign Policy.
Russia, Denmark, Norway the US and Canada all have territorial claims in the Arctic, with some disputed territories.
Melanie Joly met with Premier Andrew Furey on Thursday to discuss a variety of issues including the fishery, U.S. relations, and 5 Wing Goose Bay.
Joly says the base in Goose Bay will play a very important role in supporting Canada’s Arctic sovereignty.
“We believe in the base,” says Joly. “We believe in investing, in making sure that this great asset we have, which Harper wanted to close, needs to be strategically at the core of our investment in defense. And I’m really, really keen on investing more in defense, in creating good jobs in Labrador.”
