Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is on the province’s west coast today to make an announcement regarding the National School Food Program.
The feds announced in the 2024 budget that they would be putting $1 billion toward the program. It’s expected to provide healthy lunches for an additional 400,000 school-aged children across the country annually.
Last fall, the province announced a similar program as part of its Poverty Reduction Plan. The government plans to expand school lunch and breakfast programs to all pre-Kindergarten and K-9 schools across the province starting this month.

During an unrelated announcement Tuesday on busing, Premier Andrew Furey hinted today’s announcement was forthcoming.
“I believe we offer the best school transportation system in the country, and school lunch will soon follow,” he stated.
He declined to elaborate.
“You’ll have to wait and see,” he said.
This afternoon’s announcement is set for around 2:30 on the west coast, though the exact location has yet to be released.
Trudeau will be joined by Furey, federal Families, Children and Social Development Minister Jenna Sudds, Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay, and the minister for Rural Economic Development and ACOA, Gudie Hutchings.
