Newfoundland and Labrador has become the first province in Canada to sign on to the federal government’s school food program.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Andrew Furey, along with federal ministers and NL MPs were on hand for the announcement yesterday in Rocky Harbour, on the island’s west coast.
Federal minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Jenna Sudds, says the agreement will see Ottawa provide the province with more than $9 million over the next three years that will include more schools in the program.
She says 58 more schools will start up lunch programs.
Furey says signing on to the program will help reach more children.
Currently, more than 60,000 school kids avail of the school breakfast program in this province.
Furey says another 30,000 will be added with a program announced last year, adding the new agreement with Ottawa will increase their reach even further.
