A Newfoundlander who made a name for herself in the influential New York art scene, has died.
Jackie (Wicks) Winsor passed away on Tuesday in New York at the age of 82, after suffering a stroke, according to her family.
Winsor was a prominent sculptor, rising to fame as part of the Minimalist movement in the 1970s.
Her works were described as “outwardly simple … carefully and technically crafted and influenced” by watching her parents work while growing up in Newfoundland.
Born in St. John’s, Winsor’s family roots were in Burnt Point on the Conception Bay north shore, where she spent her childhood summers.
She moved to the United States after marrying an American and developed her artistic vision while teaching art.
Winsor was bestowed with an honorary degree from Memorial University in the 1990s and, according to family members, was fiercely proud of her Newfoundland roots.
