A survey showing that St. John’s is the best city in the country for renters is being viewed with a skeptical eye by Happy City St. John’s.
The survey, by Point2 Homes, was released earlier this year and shows that NL’s capital is the best city in the country for renters based on 24 metrics spanning three categories, including housing and economy, quality of life and community.
Happy City St. John’s vice-chair, David Brake, says like a lot of things, the survey results depend on what people value and individual circumstances.
He says the survey also doesn’t appear to address things like availability and affordability.
“Are we talking about people who are now renting? Or are we talking about people who are thinking of renting? Because I took a look, and there are just 24 properties available to rent anywhere in St. John’s. And, the cheapest is $2,000 a month,” says Brake.
Happy City St. John’s is a non-profit organization that “informs, encourages, and facilitates public dialogue around civic issues in St. John’s.”
