So far this year in Eastern Health public clinics alone, they’ve immunized over 16,000 people, which is 6,000 more than this time last year.
It was a busy day at the Flu Shot Clinic at St. Pius X on Wednesday with a steady flow of people going in and out to get their vaccines.
Despite what some still may think, you cannot get the flu from the flu vaccine.
Suzette Spurrell is the Communicable Disease Control Nurse Coordinator with Eastern Health. She says they actually inject people with a killed virus, making it impossible to get the flu from the vaccine. Spurrell says you may get some side effects that mimic the flu, but are mild. She says you may get a slight fever, pain in your arm, tenderness or swelling at the spot of injection, or feel a little bit off for one or two days.
Spurrell reminds those who do go get their flu shot that it’s important to wait at least 15 minutes before leaving.
She says to remember to wear a short sleeve shirt, bring your MCP, and if you’re under 16 you must be accompanied by a parent or league guardian to sign consent.
