The housing shortage is being felt throughout the province, and Choices for Youth says more young people are looking for housing and services outside the metro region.
According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Newfoundland and Labrador has a vacancy rate of 1.6 per cent. The lowest reported region across the province being Corner Brook at 1.2 per cent.
Executive Director Jen Crowe says that’s creating new challenges.
She says the housing crunch in St. John’s is having a “ripple effect” right across the province and has resulted in demand for services in areas they haven’t seen before.
They’re hoping two new service hubs – set to open in 2025 or 2026 in locations yet to be determined – will help meet that need.
