A well-known sports journalist passed away long before his time.

Brendan McCarthy, a cornerstone of The Telegram’s sports department for decades, had battled leukemia for the past few years.

He retired from the news media a few years ago.

McCarthy was a member of the Royal St. John’s Regatta Hall of Fame Committee, leaving behind his vast knowledge of sports.

He was 66.
