The Canadian Paediatric Society is recommending that children be screened for difficulties in reading at as young as four years old.
Former executive director of the Learning Disabilities Association Edie Dunphy says they’re pleased that a light is being shone on early identification and early intervention.
October is Learning Disability Awareness Month.
Dunphy says while four may seem very young, it’s actually an important time to identify potential issues.
She says researcher Nadine Gabb out of Boston has been doing functional MRIs with pre-schoolers that “show brain differences in those who end up being dyslexic” while still toddlers.
Current Executive Director Aneesh Sasikumar says they’re not able to diagnose learning disabilities, but they are able to provide free online screening, for adults and students in the K-12 system.
