Concerns over the current political discourse in Ottawa made it to the floor of the St. John’s council chamber yesterday.
It came up during the so-called “go-around” at the end of the public meeting, when Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary cited Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s plan to scrap the Liberals’ Housing Accelerator Fund and replace it with something else.
She worries that all the work and money that’s gone into the local housing blitz could be for naught.
“Would that have an impact, if we saw a change of government and a new plan?” she asked. “I think that’s important, obviously, because we really, seriously invested into this particular program.”
Mayor Danny Breen says while any program could fall victim to an election, at least the housing fund is up and running.
He’s equally concerned about Poilievre’s restrictions and targets to qualify for the funding in the first place.
“If you don’t fund municipal infrastructure, I’m not sure how you’re going to build houses that need that infrastructure to work.”
