The number of confirmed cases of whooping cough has jumped in the Labrador-Grenfell health zone.
Officials say that since July, there have been 26 confirmed cases in the region, in people ranging in age from 3 months to 78 years.
Dr. Nazlee Ogunyemi says the situation in the Labrador-Grenfell region is unique because the number of cases in other parts of the province has either stabilized, or dropped.
She says pertussis is believed to be spreading in communities, which means that it is important to remain vigilant and follow public health recommendations on isolation, testing and prevention.
Vaccines are also available.
NL Health Services has launched a #LoveandProtection campaign to help protect infants and older adults from the highly contagious bacterial infection.
