There were no injuries, but numerous families in the Whitbourne area have been left scrambling to find day care following a fire at Funtime Child Care Centre in the town Thursday night.
Fire Chief Jamie Budden says the call came in around 8 p.m., adding firefighters were met with heavy smoke upon arrival.
The fire, however, was contained to a single room.
Budden says there’s a reason why firefighters often advise people to keep doors throughout a structure closed at night, and yesterday’s fire was a prime example.
Pictures he shared with VOCM News show the interior of the room blackened with soot, while on the other side of the door there are few if any signs of how destructive the fire was.
“We’ve been preaching for years, and it is a part of the fire service, to tell people to close their doors at night because it does contain a fire,” says Budden, “and it gives an opportunity for the rest of the people in the house to get out when the smoke alarms are activated.”
No one was in the building at the time of last night’s fire.
The centre is expected to be closed for some time while repairs and an investigation into the cause of the fire is carried out.
