A celebration takes place this evening in St. John’s as part of the annual festival of lights on the Hindu calendar.
Diwali celebrates the spiritual victory of lightness over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
While primarily celebrated by adherents of Hinduism, some other South Asian religions, including Sikhs, also recognize the cultural significance of Diwali.
The five-day festival is usually marked with lights, fireworks, parades, music, dance and food.
A celebration will take place this evening at the Hindu Temple on Penny Lane, starting at 6:30.
