Premier Andrew Furey is holding steady on his commitment to expand access to primary care in the wake of a new poll commissioned by the NLMA that indicates a significant number of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are without a family doctor.
The poll, which was released yesterday, indicates about 30 per cent of the population does not have access to a family physician.
Furey argues that his government has “done a lot in a short period of time,” and they will do more to ensure people are connected to some type of primary care—whether that be a traditional family doctor or through family care teams.
He says nobody thought the transformation of the health care system would be without bumps in the road, but government wants to work with the NLMA on solutions.
PC leader Tony Wakeham says the NLMA’s poll is an indicator of where the province’s health care system is headed.
He says the province is spending more than ever on health care, yet things have only gotten worse.
