While the PC Justice critic says she’s pleased with money allocated for improvements to policing in the province, she says it’s missing a key piece of the puzzle.
Yesterday Justice Minister Bernard Davis announced $20 million over the next two years for various initiatives, including a joint RCMP-RNC task force on organized crime, more RCMP officers in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and more officers overall throughout the province.
Helen Conway-Ottenheimer says the plan is “shortsighted” because it does not look at the need for more Crown attorneys.
She says more police officers means more investigations and more charges laid, but without the right number of Crown attorneys, but adds the system is not sustainable.
Davis says it is more difficult to recruit for some areas of the province, but he says government put in several initiatives to counteract that such as a pay increases for the attorneys, a northern bonus, and hiring more law clerks.
But he acknowledges there needs to be a balance, and says if more is spent on policing, there usually needs to be more for Crown attorneys, too.
