The province has paid out in excess of $148,000 for 24/7 security presence at the National War Memorial in downtown St. John’s since July.
The remains of an Unknown World War I soldier were interred at the newly-refurbished site on July 1st.
Since that time there has been a noticeable security presence at the site, which now serves as the final resting place of the soldier.
In a statement to VOCM News, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure says they have a contract with GardaWorld for site security.
They say 24/7 security is being provided with two staff on-site at an hourly rate of $22.38.
According to the department, security will remain in place for the short term, with a decision for the long term being made in the future.
