A new poll from the Canadian Automobile Association shows that a large number of drivers are speeding down the roads and highways.
The national survey from CAA looks at drivers’ self-reported behavior.
They found that nearly 70 per cent of Canadians admit to speeding in a residential area at least once in the last year, about half say they regularly speed on the highway, and 20 per cent admit to regularly driving well above the speed limit.
According to the poll, only 35 per cent of Canadians think they will get caught, and the Association argues that mindset is fueling the lax attitudes towards speeding.
CAA cites information from the Traffic Injury Research Foundation which indicates that travelling even 10 km/h over the posted limit increases the likelihood of a collision by 60 per cent, while saving only four minutes of drive time on average.
In this province speeding has long been cited as a significant concern.
Several people have been nabbed for excessive speeding in this province in the last month alone, including a 26-year-old who was clocked at 201 km/h on the Outer ring Road, and two drivers who were caught street racing on Logy Bay Road—being clocked at 132 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
