The board members of Trinity Hall in Winterton have just concluded one ‘wicked’ trip to California, thanks to a Newfoundland connection to a blockbuster film.
Wicked is a film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name, which is, in turn, based on The Wizard of Oz.
The hall in Winterton is owned by Greg Wells, who produced and mixed the songs for the movie and its soundtrack.
Wells recently invited board members to California for a private viewing of the movie at the Fox studio lot.
Board member Courtney Wicks says it was the “trip of a lifetime,” noting that in addition to viewing the movie, they received a tour of Wells’ Santa Monica recording studio and were welcomed into his home.
Wicks says watching the movie was an emotional experience.
She says there is a “powerful” meaning behind the movie, especially for women and girls. “If you’ve ever felt like you were an outcast of any sort, it just, it will make you want to rise above. Truly, I cried the whole entire movie, especially the last 15 minutes… I just couldn’t control it.”
Of Wells, Wicks says he appeared “from thin air” in Winterton, and nobody really knew who he was. Now, she says she is learning more about him and, who he has worked with every day and “how remarkable he truly is.”
She says Wells opened Trinity Hall and started Scilly Cove Records, and “he’s just trying to give back and provide opportunities for Newfoundland musicians. It leaves makes me speechless,” says Wicks.
