The Town of Carbonear is one of a number of municipalities that had to haul out the heavy equipment this weekend, not to clear snow, but massive amounts of rock and debris thrown onto land by nature’s fury.
Mayor Frank Butt says despite the pounding, the breakwater held, but Beach Road had to be closed for a period of time because it was rendered impassable by the boulders, rocks and trees thrown across the road by the massive surf.
“The breakwater passed its test,” says Butt, “but the debris that came over in that particular area, which is the main artery of downtown, certainly warranted closing the area and that’s what we did.”
The road was reopened by 6:00 last night.
