You can skip the dishes, but you can’t skip the taxes.
Many restaurants have seen a boost in sales since mid-December thanks to the GST/HST tax holiday.
Richard Alexander of Restaurants Canada says dining rooms have been packed as people take advantage of tax free food and beverages.
However, the tax is still applicable for those who prefer to order their meal through third-party delivery apps like Skip and DoorDash.
Alexander says it’s a bit of a complex situation involving the Canada Revenue Agency that they’ve been trying to get sorted out.
Although taxes apply to third-party deliveries, Alexander says the tax does not apply to deliveries made by the restaurant itself as it is considered to be a part of the food production.
