The local Ukrainian community are coming together this evening to celebrate Malanka – the Ukrainian New Year – with a show at the Ship Pub.

Today’s celebrations are not unlike the mummering tradition familiar to many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

People dressed as a variety of costumed characters will lead the celebrations, including a performance by the Kubasonics, Newfoundland’s first Ukrainian band.

Music featured will include winter carols, traditional dances and Ukrainian snacks.

A portion of the proceeds from tonight’s show will go toward the Canada-Ukraine Foundation’s Aid for Artists fund, which helps artists in Ukraine who have been affected by the ongoing war.
