Options are now being considered for the removal of fuel and cargo from the Baltic III, which has been grounded at Lark Harbour for more than a month.
Salvage crews, overseen by the Canadian Coast Guard, are looking at a number of possibilities, including the use of a tug and barge with portable tanks and possible ground transportation to remove the fuel.
Upgrades and extensions to the existing road will be needed to avoid having to rely on sea-based removal operations.
T and T Salvage is now bringing in the necessary equipment to heat and remove the heavy oil from the fuel tanks, and shipboard cranes are operational and ready to go to offload the remaining cargo.
The Coast Guard says it is aware of the concerns of local lobster harvesters worried about increased marine traffic in the area, and they’re looking at options to lessen the impact, including the installation of floating docks for Coast Guard vessels to reduce congestion.
