The inmate who died suddenly at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary yesterday has been identified as Jonathan Henoche of Labrador.
The 33-year-old was awaiting trial in the 2016 murder of 88-year-old Regule Schule, a respected resident of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, well-known for her humanitarian work.
St. John’s lawyer and advocate for inmates, Bob Buckingham is calling for an inquiry by the Medical Examiner in Henoche’s death.
Buckingham says the Chief Medical Examiner has authority under the Fatal Investigations Act to conduct an investigation into a death at a correctional facility, but he believes a public inquiry is required.
He’s also calling for a full police investigation.
Buckingham represented Henoche, and represents the Estate of the late Douglas Neary, who died at the penitentiary in August of 2017.
Parsons Responds to Call for Inquiry
Justice Minister Andrew Parsons, meanwhile, says it’s too early to say if an inquiry should be called given the fact that a police investigation is still ongoing.
Parsons acknowledges that the incident is tough on everyone.
He says they’re still waiting on the cause of death, and his condolences go out to the family and to correctional officers and inmates at the Pen.
