Students at Memorial University have voted overwhelmingly in favour of establishing a new program to aid refugees.
The World University Students Canada (WUSC) branch at Memorial University spearheaded the student referendum, seeking a new student levy to support a Student Refugee Program. For an additional $2 per student each semester, WUSC says the program will cover the cost of a young refugee seeking post-secondary education.
Over 3,100 students voted, with 93 per cent approving the new levy, which will be collected by MUN through tuition. Sponsorship of the student will be organized by WUSC.
Liam O’Neill, Director of External Affairs at MUNSU, says the hard work of the students who wanted to create change paid off, and that they got the result they were looking for.
