Trade and tariffs will dominate the conversation today as Prime Minister Mark Carney meets face-to-face with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C.
Canada’s longstanding relationship with the United States has become frayed since Trump took office in January as his administration has slapped tariffs on some Canadian imports along with repeated threats made against Canada’s sovereignty.
Carney has previously stated that the decades-long relationship shared between the two countries is no more and that today’s meeting will focus on both trade and security.
“Our focus will be on both immediate trade pressures and the broader future economic and security relationship between our two sovereign nations,” the PM told reporters late last week. “My government will fight to get the best deal for Canada. We will take all the time necessary, but not more in order to do so.
