The provincial government plans to support those affected by the wildfire in Adam’s Cove and surrounding area, but it’s not clear what that will look like.
The fire ravaged the town last week, destroying at least 40 structures, and leaving some residents homeless.
Premier John Hogan says the province has been there for people affected by previous wildfires and hurricanes, and things will be no different this time around.
Details on what supports will be available will be rolled out in the coming days.
Opposition Leader Tony Wakeham says he would like to see support similar to those in Labrador last year.
“I think we’ve seen compensation in the past for the people of Labrador West—a package available to them, financial relief,” he told reporters on Monday.
“It will depend on the circumstances, but I think the first thing that we have to make sure of is that we don’t leave anybody behind. This is something that nobody plans for, and we ought to be there to make sure, as a government, that we’re there to offer that assistance and make sure we’re on the ground.”
