Thousands, including a Canadian delegation led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, filled St. Peter’s Square for the inauguration mass of Pope Leo XIV today.
In his sermon, the 267th pontiff called for unity within the Catholic Church, and said it is “with fear and trembling” that he approaches the Church’s followers “as a brother.”
And with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in attendance, the Pope shared his concerns about the war in his end-of-service prayer, stating “the martyred Ukraine is waiting for negotiations for a just and lasting peace to finally happen.”
The Vatican later said Pope Leo was to meet with Zelensky after the mass.
Carney, who is a devout Catholic, and family members also met briefly with the Pope, along with other world leaders, including U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.
Vance reportedly also asked for a sit-down with Pope Leo, less than a month after he met with Pope Francis, who died the next day of a stroke.
