The National War Memorial site in downtown St. John’s, which includes the final resting place of the province’s unknown soldier, holds sentimental and historical significance for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
Now, the landmark is being recognized by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects with an award of excellence.
The War Memorial was judged in the Small-Scale Public Landscapes category.
The revitalization project was led by Mills & Wright Landscape Architecture of St. John’s.
Last July 1st, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians gathered at the National War Memorial to mark its centennial anniversary. The event included the laying to rest of an unknown Newfoundland First World War soldier whose remains were repatriated from northern France.
