King Charles III will deliver the Speech from the Throne in Ottawa this afternoon.
Prime Minister Mark Carney invited Charles to read the speech earlier this month in a move that many argue is a message about Canada’s sovereignty.
This will be only the third time in Canadian history that a reigning monarch has delivered the speech. The last time was in 1977 by Queen Elizabeth II.
Dalhousie University political scientist Lori Turnbull says while the King cannot express his own political opinions, the fact that he agreed to go to Canada so quickly does say something about Carney and his connections.
She says “every prime minister has clout we’re a G7 country and we hold our own, but at the same time… it feels like (Carney) just moves in different circles. He’s got different people in his cell phone than other prime ministers.
The Speech from the Throne will be delivered at 12:30 p.m. NST.
