A veteran from this province, Jamie MacWhirter served in Afghanistan and is the founder of a local group PTSD Buddies.
He says for him, Remembrance Day is about remembering those that were lost, no matter what war.
MacWhirter says PTSD Buddies has taken off so much, and that it has been so busy that he now has two female psychologists who run the group, one from Canada, and one from the U.S.. He says it’s a team effort, and the PTSD buddies are growing together, so it’s working.
MacWhirter says seeing everyone come together on Remembrance Day reminds him of family.
He says he loves listening to stories from veterans, whether they’re older or younger than him, and loves sharing his own stories. That love is how the Legion started.
MacWhirter says Remembrance Day is sad at some points, but it’s also a happy time for him because he is around his veteran friends again.
He says Newfoundland and Labrador loves its veterans.
MacWhirter says one thing that makes him proud to be a Newfoundlander is that it’s not just Remembrance Day where people shake his hand and thank him for his service, it’s everyday here.
He says he is so blessed to still be living here in the province.
