A wildlife centre in Pennsylvania took in an injured Bald Eagle over the weekend that turns out to be from Newfoundland.
The Tamarack Wildlife Centre in Pennsylvania shared a story to their Facebook page about an eagle nicknamed “Journey” that was brought in wearing a band on each leg.
The group says they learned she had hatched in South Island, off of Newfoundland, in 2000, making her 19-and-a-half-years old. At some point, the bird migrated nearly 2000 miles to the United States.
Journey is battling infections in multiple wounds most likely sustained in a car collision. Her blood tested for positive amounts of lead, which may have contributed to getting injured by slowing her reaction time.
The Wildlife Centre says the levels of lead she has are comparable to “flying drunk”.
Journey’s condition is guarded, but the group says they hope the Bald Eagle can make a full recovery, and fly free again.
