The Mayor of Fogo Island isn’t putting much stock in word that the provincial government is working on getting another vessel for the intraprovincial ferry system.
Ferry users on the Bell Island and Fogo Island runs are frustrated with mechanical issues affecting their ability to travel.
The situation came to a head last week when the province suggested moving the Astron to the Bell Island run, leaving Fogo with just one vessel. That never happened, however, as not long after the announcement was made the boat that was supposed to service Fogo Island had to be taken out of service due to mechanical issues.
Transportation minister Elvis Loveless says government is preparing an expression of interest to either lease or buy a new ferry, but Fogo Island mayor Andrew Shea says he’ll believe it when he sees it, noting that there has been talk about getting another ferry for the last three years.
Shea doesn’t believe any effort is being put in to getting another ferry, arguing that there should be one somewhere in the world that the province could have gotten within the last three years.
