A parking ban has been proposed for a capital city neighbourhood where construction workers are parking “bumper to bumper” on residential streets.
City Councilor Deanne Stapleton has requested that city staff look at implementing a parking ban from 9:00-5:00 Monday to Friday on Macbeth Drive, Otter Drive and the stretch of Airport Heights Road between the two streets until the Lane Seniors Complex is open in early 2020.
Stapleton says over the last several years she has received complaints from residents about workers at the site parking on the streets and blocking off driveways, mailboxes, and creating hazardous conditions for children to walk to school in the winter time.
She received so much feedback that she said she could not let residents go through another winter without something being done.
As a “priority three” street the sidewalks are not plowed in winter. Stapleton says the city has been in communication with the contractor, but to no avail.
They have said they will talk to their employees, but ultimately it is legal for them to park there.
Stapleton says she has put a rush on city staff to come back with a recommendation as she would like to have the ban in place by December first.
She notes the ban will be lifted from Christmas Eve up to and including New Year’s day for the Holidays.
