Federal Justice Minister and Attorney General Sean Fraser says Ottawa is moving forward with legislation that will create four new criminal offences.
Two are related to protecting religious institutions with new charges of obstruction and intimidation.
The federal government’s new legislation will also recognize the offence of hate as an aggravating factor in other crimes.
Ottawa is also moving forward with another offence related to the willful promotion of hate through the use of certain symbols, like the Nazi swastika, in public places.
Fraser says it will also include the display of symbols tied to listed terrorist organizations.
