The union representing officers with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is pleased that Constable Joe Smyth’s recent conviction for Obstruction of Justice has been overturned.
The Supreme Court of Appeal has ordered a new trial in the case.

The RNCA says it disagreed with the conviction and it has supported Constable Smyth during his trial and appeal.
The union says it has a responsibility to ensure that its members are treated “fairly and equally.”
The Supreme Court of Appeal overturned the conviction on grounds that it was not proven that Smyth deliberately issued a ticket for running a red light based on false information.
