Many young people say they can’t find employment despite applying for jobs throughout the community.
Some MUN students VOCM News spoke with this week say gaining local employment is tough.
One student told VOCM News she spent three months looking for a jobs, but with no response. Another says he put out thousands of applications, both in and out of province and “I can count on both hands how many times I’ve been called back. And I’ve actually been told that they’re not hiring people from here.”
Local business, however, is saying something very different.
The Board of Trade says they’re still hearing from members who say the labour crunch is very real. CEO AnnMarie Boudreau says “many are finding it challenging to recruit and retain workers” affecting both growth and day-to-day operations.
She says the Board of Trade is working closely with government, educational institutions, and those in industry to “find practical solutions to help businesses attract, train and keep the talent” needed.
