First Light is welcoming comments from the Justice Minister reaffirming her commitment to establishing a police oversight board.
The organization says they have been calling for reform for years, noting that a report released by them in 2022 outlined a path forward to rebuilding confidence in policing through independent civilian oversight.
First Light met with minister Helen Conway-Ottenheimer last week, and say they are confident that the minister intends to move forward with the kinds of reforms “she championed while in opposition.”
They say the previous Liberal administration took “important steps” by passing the Law Enforcement Oversight Commission Act, and they are supportive of Conway-Ottenheimer’s proposal to “continue building on this foundation by introducing a broader and more comprehensive police act.”
